About
I am a member of the Centre forĀ Scottish Studies in the Department of History. My research is primarily in medieval and early modern Scotland, with a focus on gender, crime, and urban history. My current projects are a study of gender and assault in sixteenth-century Scotland, a biography of a late medieval Edinburgh woman, and an examination of masculinities in late medieval and early modern Scotland.
I am involved in promoting the history of women in Scotland through projects with Women's History Scotland, including the Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women, and a website portal www.womeninscottishhistory.org I also work with other North American scholars to promote the study of Scottish history in North America.
Many of my graduate students are working in the area of medieval and early modern Scottish history. They include
Susan Murray, 'Women in Medieval Fife'
Daniel MacLeod, 'Catholicism in Pre- and Post-Reformation Glasgow'
Heather Parker, 'Marriage Contracts in Scotland to 1600'
Sierra Dye, 'Women's Speech and the Witchhunt in Scotland'
Caitlin Holton, 'Masculinity in Medieval Scotland'
